      3. We all love the relaxation that comes with Summer Break, but did you know that those few weeks away from school can cause children and teens to lose 2 to 3 months of reading skills? This phenomenon is known as the “summer slide” and over time this can set a student back years behind their peers.
      4. Research shows that students, especially those in elementary and middle grades, can prevent (or even reverse) going down the slide by reading just 4 to 6 books over the summer!
      5. This is where the library comes in to help! Our
      6. Summer Reading program is here to prevent young participants from going down the slide by offering an exciting Reading Challenge, fun and free
      7. programs for all ages, and thousands of books for every interest.
      1. 1. Model Reading Behavior Children are 40% more likely to enjoy reading if their parents do, so model that behavior by reading, discussing books, and share stories.
      2. 2. Create a Reading Habit Set aside 15-30 mins for reading each day to form a routine. Consistency is key!
      3. 3. Let Kids Choose Their Books Choosing their own books keeps kids engaged. Help them find books, graphics novels, or comics with topics they already enjoy.
      4. 5. Use Your Resources If books aren’t working for your child, try audiobooks or ebooks (yes, those count)! Using reading tracking apps to help set goals, attending book-centered events and, of course, visiting the library can all help, too!
      1. Reading challenges can motivate young children and teens alike to read and continue learning through summer, and the prizes they get for meeting reading goals can show how rewarding books can be in a world that doesn’t always value literacy.
      2. Keep reading to see the fun, free, and educational programs that are part of our Summer Reading program. These events are opportunities for participants to grow, meet others, and get into the library!
      3. Don’t know where to start? We are here to help! Ask a librarian any questions you may have about the library, or let us recommend you a book!
      4. Turn summer into an opportunity for growth with the Trussville Public Library!
      5. 4. Find a Series They Love A good series is a great way to make anyone want to read more, so let their curiosity guide them from one book to the next.
